Volunteer Program Allows Community Members to Live at Home Longer
Dedicated community volunteers run a “Better At Home” service that allows for community members to live in their homes with the help of volunteers providing numerous services.
[We have] heavy reliance on volunteers…So many things that happen in our communities happen on the backs of volunteers who are weary. And the 30 something year olds aren’t jumping out of the woodworks. The ones that we do have say they’ll do everything…[The service is called] Better at Home, all we’ve been able to start initially, in Wynndel, the very south, we get rides, visits, so you can get a ride to, they’ll come to your house, volunteer drivers, pick you up, take you for grocery shopping, medical appointments, whatever. They’ll come and just do visits, social visit to see how you’re doing and they would set you up with bonded and pre-vetted or screened contractors to do – say you’ve come back in a wheelchair from your mishap and you’re in that wheelchair for 4 or 5 months and you’ve got 3 steps up to the front door. They’ll build a ramp or do all the modifications, put additional handrails and stairs if you have mobility challenges.
